How to treat long-term insomnia?

In traditional Chinese medicine theory, it is often related to dysfunction of internal organs, disharmony of qi and blood, and imbalance of yin and yang. Chinese medicine conditioning should be prescribed according to the specific syndrome.

1. **Liver depression and fire type**

– **Symptoms**: difficulty falling asleep, irritability, bitter taste in the mouth, headache, red tongue with yellow fur.

– **Treatment method**: soothe the liver and purge fire, calm the mind and stabilize the spirit.

2. **Phlegm-heat disturbing the heart type**

– **Symptoms**: chest tightness and irritability, excessive phlegm, sticky mouth, yellow and greasy tongue fur.

– **Treatment method**: clear away heat and resolve phlegm, harmonize the middle and calm the mind.

3. **Heart and spleen deficiency type**

– **Symptoms**: frequent dreams and easy awakening, palpitations and forgetfulness, fatigue, pale complexion.

– **Treatment method**: nourish the heart and spleen, nourish blood and calm the mind.

4. **Heart and kidney disharmony type**

– **Symptoms**: irritability and insomnia, sore waist and knees, hot flashes and night sweats (common in menopause).

– **Treatment method**: nourish yin and reduce fire, and connect the heart and kidney.

5. **Blood stasis and internal obstruction type**

– **Symptoms**: long-term insomnia, dark complexion, ecchymosis on the tongue.

Refractory insomnia often requires **about 3 months** of continuous conditioning, which requires patience.

Avoid long-term dependence on sleeping pills, and gradually reduce the dosage and combine with Chinese medicine.

If accompanied by anxiety, depression and other emotional problems, it is necessary to combine liver-soothing and depression-relieving treatment.
